She was so desperately in love that she could no longer see properly, something had happened to her eyes, and she blinked constantly as if to clear them of the blur. She saw everything through a film of salt tears, and her voice became husky because her throat was bathed in the irrepresible and continuous crying which her happiness caused her. - Ragtime, E. L. Evelyn Nesbit had caused the death of one man and wrecked the life of another and from that he dedcued that there was nothing in life worth having, worth wanting, but the embrace of her thin arms.

Homage to My Hips
by Lucille Clifton

these hips are big hips.
they need space to
move around in.
they don't fit into little
petty places. these hips
are free hips.
they don't like to be held back.
these hips have never been enslaved,
they go where they want to go
they do what they want to do.
these hips are mighty hips.
these hips are magic hips.
i have known them
to put a spell on a man and
spin him like a top.

Some goals for the new year. They make sense to me as photographs probably more than they ever totally could in words.

"We fought. Fought for a long, long time. And then I killed him."
"That's all?"
"What do details matter?"
"He was so big. And you are so small."
"I have eaten his heart."
"Well," said Merle, for nothing better occured to her.

To live to see fifty was a wish she was beginning to dare to have. My name is Delphie and I'm fifty years old. Count em. Start at one and count em. One Delphie, two Delphie, three Delphie. Before she had reached forty her only wish was that the world would be kind to her daughter Cassandra, or "Cassie" as some people called her. Now a second wish was beginning to creep up on her, and she was afraid that wishing to see fifty might make God turn his back on the first wish about her daughter. "Make up your mind about them wishes, Delphie, I ain't got all day and you ain't got but one wish coming to you."

beginnings

The New Year, Mondays, first days of the month, mornings, dawns, midnight. They're all moments of beginnings of something, marking off the end of one time and the beginning of a next.
I want to live everyday beginning it anew, my goals and dreams fresh in my mind and in my heart. Like Vic,
"I have so many plans for things I’m going to do this year.
Some of them involve you and are very exciting,
others involve
strength and discipline
and are things I must do
alone."
